Denpasar Town City Tour

Denpasar city tour is a unique tour to visit Denpasar town with all its local society activities. Pasar Badung and Pasar Kumbasari

These markets are located in the main road, Gajah Mada street, is the center of the town's economic. The market is seperated by the river, called Tukad Badung, connected with the bridge. The market located east of the Badung River / Tukad Badung is call Pasar Badung, and the market located west of the river is called Pasar Kumbasari. This area has become a shopping center of Bali. Kumbasar Market sells costume and clothing item at price relatively cheaper than clothing item sold at the shop in Gajah Mada Street which are mostly owned by citizen of Chinese clan. Kumbasar Market was previously call Peken Payuk (pot market); it sold such item such as gerabah (jar like pot), coek (clayp plate), paso (clay bucket), caratan (clay water jug), jading (clay barrel), penyantokan (mixer from clay), coblong (clay cup), kekeb (rice cover made of clay) and others. All these time are used as kitchenware and for ceremony. Since this market was most popular, as place to sell payuk/pot, hence Kumbasari Market in the past was referred to as Peken Payuk or pot market. Meanwhile the Pasar Badung / Badung market sells daily need such as vegetable, cloths, jewelery, kitchen tolls, etc.

Bali's Governor, Prof. Dr.Ida Bagus Mantra, officially opened the Denpasar Market on 24 Arpil 1984. This market area is about 14.544 m2 with an outdoor area of 9,964 m2. The building has 4 stories. The local people who shop at this market are not only from Denpasar communities but also from outside of the town. In the days leading up to the big holidays such as Galungan, Kuningan and others, this market are always crowded with buyers and sellers.. Badung Market has two time fire and totally renovated in 2018 and finished this month March 2019 with new design and facilities such as lift, elevator, disable facilities, fire distinguisher, etc. become traditional market with modern facilities. The cleanliness of the market is highly maintained by government. Mr Jokowidodo inaugurated the Pasar Badung Friday, 22nd March 2019. These markets are open around the clock from 5 am to 5 pm. Then, the evening market open from 5 pm until 5 am on the next day when morning market start again. Meanwhile the Senggol Market in Kumbasari opens at 2 pm and close at 11;30 PM. The unique name of Senggol Market, is possibly take from the situation and condition of the people's on shopping where they must jostle each other for position because of visitors denseness. This Senggol market sells a variety of cheap food from the Balinese, Javanese and Chinese cookery. It also sells various type of adult and children clothing. The location of Denpasar Market is encircled by shops along the street of Gajah Mada. On the right side is Sulawesi Street which is famous for textile. Denpasar traditional market is progressively strengthening the identity of Denpasar's economic center which is open 24 hours and is never silent or empty of visitors. At traditional market , you will find transaction taking places between buyers and merchant with multifarious merchandise to satisfy life daily need such as kitchen supplies, appliance required for Hindu ritual, fruit and traditional clothes. At this market, you will see local people, especially the women who carry extremely heavy item in a big basket balance on their heads. This women offer their service for vendor or buyer to bring their shopping item. These women are called Tukang Suwun.

Jagatnatha Temple and Bali Museum

Jagatnatha Temple is one of the biggest temple in Denpasar Town, which many Hindu people in Denpasar visit to pray, particularly on full moon and new moon. This temple is full of religious and artistic ornaments. In the center of the temple, there is a high temple building called Padmasana encircled by fertile tropical garden. Jagatnatha Temple located at Mayor Wisnu street, Denpasar and adjacent is Museum Bali. At 20 November 1961, Parisadha Hindu Darma, the Hindu organization in Bali held a meeting and had decision to build a temple in the center of Denpasar Town. Ida Bagus Suteja, a Bali governor on that time given a name Jagatnahta Temple this temple. The development of this temple took a long process as during that periode 1961 - 1965 Indonesia had unstable politic condition, that effected to Bali Island also. Shortly, The Padmasana has finished at 13 Desember 1967, then the temple complex total finish around 5 February 1968. On full moon 13 May 1968 Jagatnatha Temple was inaugurated. Just next door steep, there is a Museum Bali, the oldest museum in Bali Island. This museum you will find a lot of ancient artifacts of prehistory which have very high artistic value based on HIndul culture, Bali tradition and way of life. The collection of the museum provides a different experience on your tour. This museum was built in 1910, initiative for taking care of Balinese culture, preserve and maintaining. The initiative had come from worry of culture erosion, omit and disappear. The initiator was WFJ Kroon, the resident of Bali during Dutch Colonial support by Bali King, social prominent and some artist. The building concept was the combination of palace and temple architecture. The museum was finished in 1929, officially open at 8 December 1932. Basically the traditional architecture of Bali, either temple as the holy place or house as resident are always planned and built based on Hindu teaching.

Bali Museum is divided into 3 yard, each yard has connected by gate. There are main building in Museum Bali such as:
  • Tabanan Building is donated by King Tabanan, represent of architecture Bali from Tabanan Regency or south Bali area.
  • Karangasem Building was donated by King Karangasem and represent of architecture in east Bali area.
  • Buleleng Building was donated by King Buleleng and represent of architecture from north Bali area.

Furthermore, prehistoric object collection such as Grave Petrify (sarkopag). The object collection was coming from history era such as Stupika clay containing superstitious formula Ye Te, the bronze statues (Hindu and Budha statues). Meanwhile, the ethnography object collections such as Keris, Endek Cloth and religious ceremony equipment such as Sangku, Cecepan and Sidakarya mask, agriculture tool, etc.. Bali Museum is open for public as one of the tourist destination in Denpasar Town, Monday to Saturday, start from 8 in the morning and close at 4 PM. On Monday will be close for visitor. Many visitor visit Museum Bali to explore and observe deeply about Bali culture, history and tradition, but some others come for making prewedding photo session as the building is so traditional unique and artistic. At weekend, in Wantilan building, there is social activity such as painting and Bali Dance lesson, do their rehearsal. Many children joint these activities, one of the effort to preserve Bali culture. In front of Museum Bali and Jagatnatha Temple is Puputan Badung Square, Balinese call Lapangan Puputan Badung, large grassy square. It is only notable feature is a heroic, three figure statue standing in the pool with their fountains in honour of Balinese nobles who died in the battle againt Dutch Colonial in 1906. Puputan Badung square is so important for Denpasar Town as a place to do social activity such as gathering, exercise, leisure. On the holiday or new year eve, there is culture event held here. The monument is erected in the middle of Denpasar civic center, Renon, a home to several goverment offices, including Bali goverment office, Bali goverment tourism office, etc which all building architectural style used in constructing the buildings, adapting age-old Balinese designs to the modern era. This is one of the effort to preserve Bali traditional architecture . It is a symbol of Bali people's strungle to gain independence after Dutch Colonial after retreated from this country. This monument immortalizes the sould and spirit of Bali's people strungle. It is also aim to take care of adn develop and preserve the Balinese culture for next generation.
